The Department of geography was established in 2004 within the school of Social Sciences, which evolved from the Department of Social Sciences, and then became one of the Departments of the school of Humanities.

Upgrading the academic and research level to keep pace with scientific progress, excellence in geographical studies and its modern technologies, and working to develop effective national competencies in the field of mapping.

As an extension of the Department's vision and its application, the Department seeks to prepare highly qualified graduates according to what will be contained in the objectives of each division of the Department's programs.

1. Localization of graduate programs in geography.
2. Development of scientific research, expansion of authorship and publication in the field of geography.
3. Preparing human cadres who are familiar with the research and academic aspects of the geography branch, and are able to compete in the labor market.
4. Providing scientific studies of various geographical phenomena.
5. Keep abreast of modern scientific developments in the science of geography, employable work.
6. Directing students to research in the geography of Libya to serve sustainable development issues.
